Beans don't burn in the kitchen....

Remember the song from the Jeffersons?  What??  Am I the only child of the 70s in blog land?  Geez, I hope not!

My sister is an excellent cook.  I am just ok.  I mean I CAN cook, but seriously, I have to read the recipe like a zillion and a half times, and even then I often miss a step.  I blame it on the fact that I have a problem with math.  ie: I'm a math moron.

But I digress.  My sister does most of the cooking in the house.  I usually stick to things that I know or family recipes.  Such as my nana's baked beans...(see, there WAS a point to my blog title).  It is a sacred family recipe that I have shared with a few of my gal pals, but they have been sworn to secrecy with promises of death if divulged to any outsiders.

Today I decided it was my turn to cook.  Out came the top secret baked bean recipe.  And the NY strip steaks from the freezer. (FYI, I am a pro bbq-er...my sister can't even turn the grill on).  And just for grins I decided to make homemade biscuits.  From scratch, people!  I went online to www.foodnetwork.com and searched.  The Neeley's buttermilk biscuits seemed like a cinch.

I put the butter in the freezer like they recommended.  Then I cut it in with a fork (which p.s. took forever and gave me a self diagnoses of carpal tunnel syndrome.  Note to self...buy pastry cutter).  Added the buttermilk, gently made a square and used my cute new scalloped biscuit cutters that inspired this brave fete.

And all this whilst making the most delicious version of baked beans yet, and enjoying a hardy duet by my sister and I of "Beans don't burn in the kitchen, beans don't burn on the grill....."

Oh, AND grilling the steaks to perfection, and watering my new square foot garden box so that my cold crop veggies could get a little drinky poo.

The timer went off, and I skipped to the oven, eager to see my maiden biscuit voyage.

They looked like this:
 I know, right?!  Gorgeous!

Ok, fine, they really looked like this:
Apparently BEANS don't burn in the kitchen, but BISCUITS do!  Dang those Neeleys!  Why do they have to act all cool with their "honey child" and "mmmm hmmmm girl".  Next time I'm going with another family recipe passed down for generations.

  1. It's ok, I burned homemade vegetable soup a few weeks back. Yes - Soup! How do you burn soup?

You'll have to make your secret recipe beans for a neighborhood bbq this summer so that I can try them :)

  4. Dang it! The first time I ever made biscuits from scratch was back in my Homemaking class in high school. I wonder if they even still have that class?? Anyway, they turned out like bricks and could've easily broken a window pane, so I never tried again.

  6. Ha! My family has that same biscuit recipe
around the archives. Perhaps we're both related to the Pilsbury Dough Boy?

I've never attempted biscuits from scratch. I'm still in shock from that homemade cookies incident when I was 17.

  13. This is so funny! I laughed when I saw the "traditional" method of biscuits in a can. I hate it when I spend so much time on a recipe and it doesn't turn out!!!

Thanks for the follow on my blog today, and HI from SITS! If you attempt any of my recipes, be sure to remember that you can email me anytime to ask questions!

  17. This recipe has never failed me:

    1/3 c. shortening / 2 c. flour / 2.5 tsp. baking powder / 1 tsp. salt / 1 c. milk

(doubling is fine, wheat flour is fine)

Cut shortening into pre-sifted dry ingredients / Add milk / Knead a bit / Roll out and cut / Bake at 350 until they look done.

(note: they will stay kind of light in color)

Also, since you have so much fun in the kitchen, you might want to try making the incredible bouncing bread we made. Just don't let the mini diva help you or your stove- will go Ka-Plooey
